Run 63030 March 2008Spiderman, John Nash and Guy OsbourneNorthney - Hayling Island SU727037

Somehow we managed to get a shedload of chariots into the small carpark in Northney on this dry and bright morning (10ºC). There was a welcome for newbies Sue Bell and Julia Lynn and visitors Caroline and Biggles from Wellington HHH before the gang of three hares informed us of a lady's check and to take care along any creek banks that might come our way. And so we set out from the north east corner of this small flat island.

Soon we were floundering around the marshy bramble infested inlet south of the marina, Dogwhistle had developed a pronounced duck waddle gait in order to make progress and Old Faithful seemed more interested in playing with a soccer ball that had come in on the tide.

A way out through the marina was found and with no more land to the north, east or west the highly intelligent pack deduced that the trail must be south along the muddy foreshore, and then west to Langstone Bridge. The obvious FP here was false, but with a bit of hunting we found the trail out through the petrol station, across the road and into the north end of Stoke Common... then nothing..no flour ..nothing. Guy said "John laid this bit" as the hares took us to the next check at the old railway embankment. From here the pack headed south, all except Dr Blood and Francis who fell for the long falsie north towards the non existent rail bridge. The trail south through the common gave us glorious views out over Langstone Harbour towards Southsea and also gave Natasha the chance to gather fresh nettles for her famous soup.

At the bottom of the common we recrossed the main road and with the help of a resident managed to find the inconspicuous FP east to the lady's check. The ladies done well here, so we were soon on our way further east and out through ploughed fields towards St Peter's. Here the residents proved to be not so friendly, taking exception to The Chamois who took a shortcut over a FP that had been ploughed up. Then making our way north from the church, with Natasha, Francis and Dr Blood being real FRBs we found the On-In and the Chariots packed like Sardines.

After applause for the hares for finding a challenging trail in what would seem to be unpromising territory, we had a whole raft of nominations, some of which were; Guy for blaming everyone else, Natasha for nettle gathering, Torchy for pushing his bike through a gap and then failing to get through himself... after a show of hash hands the Hash-It was presented to Old Faithful for his early antics with the soccer ball. Most of us then left the island to rehydrate at The Ship Inn where chariot parking proved entertaining.

Bambi.
