In Chaos Theory the Butterfly Effect proposes that the flapping of a butterfly in
the Amazon rainforest could cause a tornado to hit Selsey. Along similar lines a
Bluebottle was enjoying a lovely sunny warm spring Sunday morning when it was hit by
a red chariot that was speeding its way to Older Hill, the demise of the unfortunate
insect was to have a profound effect later that day
The hares, two of whom were doing an encore for the previous run, were waiting to greet
arrivals to the secluded car park up a single track dead end lane. No new or even recently
new folk turned up, however the pleasant surprise of the day was to see Tigger arrive
accompanied by her medical team The Doc and The Chamois. For them a quiet stroll was on
the menu which is just as well because Flash was busy looking through the liability
clauses of our insurance policy
Mussolini then pointed out the way to go and asked us to be careful and use our "Noddles"
whatever part of the body that is ? Using his Noddle, Spiderman got the jump on us all by
having already headed up the path towards Telegraph Hill and found the first check
at the T junction
Both left and right proved false so the unimaginative pack needed hare help to find an
obvious trail out south east on to the sandy soil of Woolbeding Common. The delay served
late arrivals Bika, Kermit and Pete well as we were still within earshot of the start
There now followed a downhill charge through a series of checks that were easily sorted,
we headed down the Lipchis Way (ever heard of this ?) down, down, down, west and into the
boggy ground in the valley bottom just south of Titty Hill, the normally rather docile
progress of Kermit disappearing with a frenzy of gravity assisted leg motion which meant
that he was sitting on the gate at the bottom for the rest of us to arrive
Now it was payback time, as the trail headed north and north east up through Redford with
Bika in front, and on up through the cottages where the trail is hard to find with
Old Faithful in front, and on up to the top of Older Hill itself
The view from the top was limited by the heat haze and by the salty sweat running down
the forehead and into the eyes
Just in case it matters to you, here is the ordered list of arrivals at the top, OF,Max,
Splasher, Flash,Pancsi, Panda, Bika, Canman, Mussolini, Dogwhistle, Spiderwoman, Soapbox,
Wee Ginge, Kermit, Pete, Spiderman and Pru on her hands and knees
Now there are two ways back to the chariots from here, the easy way by the path that follows
the contours beneath the triangulation point or the hard way south east down into the valley
and back up the other side
Yes, you guessed it, while Mussolini took the easy way arms folded and grin on face, the rest
of us made our way down as best we could and then crawled back up. Thankfully we soon found
the On-In on the little path just above the lane back to the chariots after only one hour and
six minutes of hashing, it seemed much longer
At the circle there was criticism for a few who had been seen kicking out falsies as they ran
through them, a telling off to Panda for talking to at least two strange men in the woods,
however yours truly received the Hash-It for making a fuss about cleaning the remains of a
splatted Bluebottle from the chrome of my chariot
Thank you, you hares for a great run on unfrequented turf
I was not able to join the rest at The Country Inn in Bepton for fluids.
