This hash, held on a sunny cool autumn morning, was a landmark event in the history
of our club, the unveiling of a commemorative bench, with the kind permission of Lavant Parish Council.
Apparently Chelsea FC had arranged a late kick off so that our JMs could be with us at this time
of the year when it is traditional to remember those that have gone before
Accordingly this run started with short jog up to St Mary's, where Phil and Roger are laid
to rest, for a minute of quiet thought for those Hashers that have reached their final On-In.
Spiritually refreshed we sallied forth on to the streets of East Lavant to look for flour and
swiftly found it on Lower Road with Brylcreem, making a welcome return, out in front.
After a bit of dicing with Sunday morning drivers on Fordwater Road we made our way on to
the lane, alongside the Lavant all the way to a regroup in the shadow of Tigger's gaff.
Several checks on the way attempted to lure the pack west across the stream as we have
done so many times before, but not this time.
Checking from the restart split the pack in thirds, some up Maplehurst, some continuing on
Fordwater and some on the FP north. Confusion reigned for a short while as Spiderman returned
from the north claiming it to be false, however he was delusional as usual.
Then we followed Two Ferrets north on the sticky FP to the next gate, from where one day in the
future there may be a good view of the never to be Northern Bypass.
Ahead was false, leaving a climb up the slope to the sunken lane and north towards Raughmere
Farm, across the private road to find a fish hook within sight of the chariots. The unlucky group,
Brylcreem, Snake Charmer, Jones, Two Ferrets, Bika and Bambi had difficulty in avoiding inappropriate
touching as they squeezed back past the rest on the narrow path.
Meanwhile the new FRBs found their way west up on to the soccer pitch where The Ref tried
to start a game but didn't have the balls, or a whistle.
At the adjacent mini roundabout Kinky headed off towards the path to Centurion Way, then turned back
saying "it will never be that way", which of course it was. We turned north on CW where the
slog back to Lavant was interrupted by a final fish hook that caught, Pancsi, The Ref, Vixen,
Bika, Two Ferrets and Bambi.
To round off the Hash we were treated to some more sticky steps on the long way round the field
south of the primary school, where we had a panoramic view of autumnal colour in contrast to
the verdant green of young winter wheat and the odd butterfly still wafting about.
A quick dash across the main road and over to the gravel of the Lavant river bed meant that
we reached the On-In after one hour and twelve minutes of relaxed hashing.
We discovered that Pru and Tigger had set out two tables laden with grub and liquid refreshment
which we started to consume with great relish.
During the feeding frenzy Hairbrush admitted that he had forgotten to bring the Hash-It and had
decided to award it to himself as a chastisement.
Then another pause, this time for the very important unveiling of the commemorative bench,
the reason why we were Hashing and celebrating at Lavant Green.
The Chamoise, Tigger and Canman pulled away the cover with great ceremony to reveal a sturdy,
inscribed oak bench, the rest of us applauded and then rushed over to sit on it and have a photo taken,
it all went very well.
We must thank Panda, Flash and Old Faithful for doing everything to make the bench a reality and
organise its unveiling.
Also Pru and Tigger for laying on the grub and grog, and while we are at it, thank Panda, Flash
and Old Faithful for an imaginative trail in our back yard.
On On ! Bambi.
