With no volunteers, Kinky and Old Faithful jumped in at the last moment to provide what they described as a short outing around Emsworth, crafted to finish in time for hashers to watch England play in The World Cup.

There were no clouds in the azure sky and the mercury was on its way up, as our JMs called us to order to let the hares tell us about some strange markings involving three dots and a line. That was it, no histrionics, no merry quips, no visitors, no newbies, just down to business and away south via the underpass to a check outside the Coop.

Then on the edge of the Western Mill Pond to jostle with lickers involved in an ice cream feeding frenzy at Flintstones Tea Room.

Most of the pack started out south on The Promenade while Flash and Vixen took to the East along the ankle snapping shingle giving way to putrid decomposing weed left by the last high tide. Who is this ?, Splasher coming from the far end to meet them, he has been wandering around since The Coop.

The pack caught up and soon found flour north across King Street and out to The Old Flour Mill on Queen Street via that narrow foot path that goes down the drive of a large house.

Given the heat, there was some muttering about stopping off for a beer break at The Lord Raglan, however we spotted a determined Pocket Rocket wooshing along South on the edge of the Eastern Mill Pond followed by Flash, Panda, Prancer and Snake Charmer. This manoeuvre resulted in a long line of yellow dots reflecting on the limpid waters of the pond, making an ad hoc regroup necessary at the sluice.

Kinky was spotted coming south down Slipper Road carrying the old Self Raising, something to ruminate on.

Everything but the boat yard was false, we wandered in, and were soon on the sea wall admiring that lovely view down the channel towards Hayling Island.

Those in the know appreciate that if one continues South from here you will find oneself on the circumscription of Thorney Island. Bika on the other hand obviously was not in the know, however he is now.

Accordingly we made our way East through that horse paddock that is usually a quagmire, but not in the oven heat of today, to Thorney Road. North on the pavement here to the footpath that crosses the road; to the left a nice green, wide, short grass path; to the right a narrow stinging nettle, bramble lined path alongside the sewage treatment plant, yes you guessed, it was clothes peg on nose time.

Just before we reached the recently rebuilt Thornham House a fish hook for six caught Bambi, Popeye, Bika, Prancer, The Ref and Spiderman; it also caught Dr Blood who had misread the six as a nine.

In Prinstead now, a long way from the chariots and all thought of a short run was fading fast. Once again, those in the know found lots of flour back to Emsworth via Ham Lane and the path that runs just south of the main road to The Sussex Brewery.

From here no more checks, just arrows to the underpass near the top of Slipper Road, explainig Kinky's earlier appearance from this direction, then On-In after one hour and twenty minutes of SPF 50 Hashing.

All except Dr Blood were present at the circle to thank the Hares and give the Hash-It to Snake Charmer for unsolicited criticism of the false trail markings. We were all rushing off to The Ship when Dr Blood found his way in, not many noticed.

At the ship the crowd was starting to gather round the big screen, so there was room in the shade of umbrellas in the garden.

Bambi did not stay to watch the match, leaving by bicycle as it was starting. About ten minutes later on the rise to Hermitage a huge roar was distinctly heard coming from all directions.

On – On ! Bambi.
