At the end of the previous Hash, Prancer and Vixen stayed still
when everyone else took a pace back at the call for volunteers.
It was thanks to them that we were able to gather on a cool overcast morning
under the green leaves of Eartham. In fact it was Prancer and Cheesy Chips
who laid the trail, although the latter was not present because he needed
to be somewhere else.
The JMs had no excuses this time, both being present to continue providing
a verbally sparse welcome routine for the remaining Hare who by contrast
babbled on about the run while feverishly drawing poor examples of the
alphabet on the damp ground.
Most of the pack noticed when Prancer gesticulated in the direction of Stane
Street which resulted in a steady stream of Hashers leaving the car park, some
though were more interested in the news of Pru having been rear ended
in Salisbury on Friday morning in the rain.
Two Ferrets Fighting, brim full of local knowledge, guided us East across the Roman
road and into the deep gloom and small level paths towards The Plain. As is the
way, she ran out of luck, continuing East on a falsie towards Nore Hill while the
rest turned North on the more gentle climb towards North Wood.
A fish hook for five along this path caught Pancsi, Bambi, The Ref, Flash and Kinky.
Then the next check had disappeared, although some thought that it had never existed.
Pancsi was about to share some very interesting observation regarding the situation
when a fly flew into his open gob, reducing him to a doubled
up wheezing impression of a forty a day man.
Soon it was back to Stane Street, staring up the hill towards the popular six way
junction that has the bench and signpost where we have regrouped many times
before. Mussolini and Flash were not taken in by the attraction above, they found
a scramble through the bramble North West that cuts across to one of the paths
that emanate from the aforementioned bench.
We could not find any trail from here, Prancer appearing even more confused than
usual until Vixen was forced to refer to the emergency map and set us on our
way again continuing North West up the hill with Old Faithful
far ahead, silhouetted against the skyline.
A much needed regroup welcomed our puffing mob about half way to Stubbs
Wood yet we were soon underway again South West then South back down
the slope in a loop that took us back to Stane Street, which essentially formed
the backbone of this Hash.
The chariots were not far away now as we reached the little valley below Mary's
Wood but there was a sting in the tail for those making a bee line home, in the
form of a fish hook that caught The Ref, Bambi, Snake Charmer and
Pancsi who stood in for Pocket Rocket who just couldn't be asked.
The last little downhill weaving path to reach the On-In was an exhilarating
end to a nicely timed Hash after one hour and three minutes of cool forest stimulation.
At the circle, Old Faithful nearly received the absent Hash-It
( It still being with Dogwhistle ) for just one too many short cuts.
Kinky was notionally presented with the wooden sanitary garland when it became
known that he could have been horny on the run had he not left his
equipment in the boot of his chariot.
Luckily Prancer has not yet been banned from The George which is where
we headed for a pint or two of amply priced ale in the ramble rose garden.
On On ! Bambi
