T’was a cool 7oC winters day, with a westerly force 6 gusting 7 howling but blue skys.
Having distributed celebratory t-shirts, the JM’s welcomed the group of 36 people to the 1000’th Hash since its foundation in 1983.
Bambi welcomed Ravinous Curls, the JM from Hazlemere H3, Dr. Pussy and Camping Gaz from Guildford and MJ as a Hash virgin. It was really good to see new faces and some faces that we hadn’t seen for a while including Sure Shot, Tigger a founder member, and her son Guy.
A celebratory photo was taken displaying the new t-shirts, Jackie was awarded the Hash name of Turkey Tail on account of the medicinal mushroom she had foraged.
The hares, Sausage Lottery, Slightly Disappointing and Blind-Ness explained the flour signs and invented a new triangular “danger road ahead” sign for free running dogs (not sure the dogs understood but their owners did).

From Hunston it was north then east, across the main road and through a shiggy flooded track to a cabbage field. Northwards through skirting Hunston Copse, then east through it before skirting it south south west on a long slippy/slidy track. Sonja rescued a flying bobble hat from the midst of a swampy field for our visitor.
From here we joined Church Lane heading north West and passed St. Leodegar’s church. Breaking south west on a shiggy track Dr. Pussy showed her mud break dancing skills whilst staying upright (just) before we regrouped a field edge & continued.
Having crossed the main road, we headed due north on the old Selsey tramway line, stopping at the corner of an allotment field for Slightly Disappointing to dispense a homemade bramble port restorative that was far from disappointing. It was then west north west into the biting westerly to the minor road and canal. Grass hopper displayed his mud skating skills and was photographed flat on his back but unharmed (we believe) as we skirted a flooded field.

Completing the loop we headed in a north easterly direction along the Chichester canal passing a brave person battling their stand up paddle board into the wind, frisky temperatures for aquatic sports. Then south back to the carpark and Hunston Community Club (HCC) for warmth, victuals and grog having completed 3.4 miles in 55 minutes. Excellently timing indeed, all credit to the hares.

HCC had very kindly agreed to let us have the function room which took the group nicely, as we spread our feast on a well-protected pool table.
Having more than replenished the calories spent and rehydrated, Snake Charmer awarded the Hash-It to Dag for being outrageous and the Hasher of the year to Sausage Lottery, for enlivening the group, providing picnics and organising the HCC for us. The elaborate hinged seat was emblazoned with a plaque of current and past winners, recently bought up to date by Old Faithful, for which we are most grateful.

The 3 joint masters then handed over the reins to the new Joint Masters, Bambi, Old Faithful and Splasher. Splasher offered his apologies for non-attendance finding Lanzarote warmer.
Bambi regaled us with a brief(ish) history of the hash, which had clearly involved many hours of web research to pull out the good parts of particularly memorable hashes to the merriment of the group. It was accompanied by a looped slide show of the photos from the website, which was great
A raffle was then completed awarding 50 or so prizes to the lucky winners and the feasting had come to a close. 14:30 was time for tidy up and departure.

On-On,
Popeye
