T’was a windy force 4 gusting 5 but warm 20°C and sunny with my favourite clouds, tiny ones! The group of 14 of us together with 1 hash hound, Aragorn, gathered in the Sussex Brewery carpark in Emsworth.
Bambi, being ultra fit, cycled the 7 miles from Chichester and welcomed the group to run 1009 and handed over to the hares, Bika and Old Faithfull. Kinky and Thumper lived within walking distance of the Hash and so travelled that way. Popeye and Olive Oil, also lived withing walking distance, but drove as they had engagements with horses and bees afterwards. The hares explained that together with the standard marking, was a “C” marking a point where people could change at their cars, if they wished, en-route to the On-Inn/pub.

From the pub carpark we headed west to Emsworth before heading north west on Lumley Road besides Peter Pond with its duck sanctuaries, then west again onto the common. A dry and mud free hash, Bambi found the only mud on the route to wallow in, having attempted to clear it in a single bound. We then headed south along the river Ems only to find a false, false - a true trail labelled false which confused us for a while. It was then west at the board walk, through Emsworth centre, finding the pedestrian underpass to be false as well as both sides of Emsworth Millpond. Olive Oil, with a nose for the true trail had ignored the falsies and headed off along Warblington Road, miles ahead of the rest of us. Eventually a check and left turn caught her out, as the rest of the group then circled back to the beach.

The trail continued back along the beach on Wayfarer’s walk, 90 minutes ahead of the spring tide to the mill pond, where a fishhook caught Bambi, The Ref. and Popeye. It was then round Emsworth Millpond on the promenade, before continuing on the beach heading towards the Marina. Taking a north turn from the beach, we found a track along the tidal inland stretch, along the road and then back on the path between the Slipper Mill pond and tidal stretch where another fishhook caught me again! as well as Olive Oil, Bambi and Kinky. On this stretch we noticed people disembarking a yacht moored at the bottom of their garden; there are few people in the UK who can sail to their house. We then went south through the boat yard and Heron Quay to the Sussex Boarder Path and back to Thorney Road. Bambi and Popeye headed off on Thornham lane toward Prinstead before being called back to head for the On-Inn.

In the post run beer garden Bambi nominated a selection of refreshing “down downs” to:-

  • The Hares, Bike and Old Faithfull, by way of a, “thank you, for laying the trail”
  • Bambi for gracefully bounding over a muddy patch, landing with a 2 foot slide, backside first on the patch he was seeking to avoid.
  • Kinky for having “sympathy bandaging” on his wounded paw.
  • Olive Oil for being way out in front, most of the time.
  • Dr Blood was awarded a Down-Down but wasn’t back before others finished it and got the Hash-it for getting lost, despite proclaiming that he wasn’t lost, just stopping to talk to people.

The trail was about 4.2 miles long (my sports watch took 10 minutes to find its satellites) completed in about 70 minutes.

    On-On,
    Popeye
