10122023-07-02 11:00Hare: The Blockers - Joint run with Haslemere HHH - East MeonEast Meon - Workhouse Lane CP SU677222

T’was a warm 18°C overcast but bright day with a light breeze (force 4 on the water but less inland). The group of 18 of us together with 2 dogs, gathered in East Meon car park.
This was a first, as Hazlemere H3, some of whom have joined for a couple of runs, laid the trail which was extremely kind of them. East Meon was a good choice too, we haven’t run there since Kinky and Thumper laid a trail in June 2014, 9 years ago. The group was pretty evenly matched with 10 from Chi HHH and 8 from Hazlemere H3.

Alpha and Beta Blocker were the hares. They explained the use of foreign symbols and the colour of sawdust, all very advanced for a luddite like me.

The very well marked route was broadly speaking a very italic figure of 8 that touched without crossing over. The On-Out was to the east through East Meon and alongside the stream to Frogmore, then through a field of elbow high grass to a scramble down a bank to a stream bed style rocky path. It was on this scramble that HigherWatha took a bit of tumble straining something.
Then we went north, through a gate and up an 80m climb in a field of white cows and millions of grasshoppers to a regroup, or “hold” as they say in these parts. The view of the landscape from this vantage point was tremendous.
We then followed a powder paint red arrow through a field of almost ripe barley to another red arrow and a path that headed back downhill through Rookham Copse to the foot of Sir William’s hill.
After a climb again, we passed a field of small blue flowers called Fiddleneck together with a pheasant feeder. A “hold” at the top of the hill brought us together again and we found a field of different small blue flowers which were flax plants.

Some of the group had wisely taken a shorter more leisurely course, but the hardened core, 14 of us had almost reached Langrish before circling slowly anti-clockwise and heading back to briefly join the previous trail before departing and though Park Farm and skirting the summit of Park Hill with its splendid views over East Meon to the hills beyond. It was then down through the church yard and back through the village to the carpark.

The Hash-it was awarded to HigherWatha, for her unfortunate tumble.

We thanked the Hazlemere H3 and the Blockers for a great hash.

A quick change and off to the beer garden of the Ye Olde George Inn, where some were served with terrific looking food for a hungry hasher.

The trail was about 5.8 miles long completed in 1 hour 43 minutes, a longer one for a short legged critter like me, but most enjoyable.

On-On,
Popeye
