10202023-10-22 11:00Old Faithful and Bambi - Joint run with IOW - On-Inn with refreshmentsEmsworth Kings Arms Pub SU746058

T’was a beautiful 16°C day with blue sky and no wind to speak of as the Isle of Wight Hash and our motley crew gathered The Kings Arms carpark, Emsworth. Thus there was 24 of us and 4 dogs.
The Isle of Wight hash wrong footed us, by coming as pirates, arrrrgh

Bambi welcomed all to Hash 1020 and introduced the Hares as himself and Old Faithfull, explained our foreign markings to the Isle of Wight Hashers and told cracking jokes (or cracker jokes?).

The route broadly speaking anti-clockwise. The group headed off west along the Havant Road before going north on Convent Lane, past Ruth Butler’s Pasivhaus, that is so air tight and well insulated, that it has 1 tiny radiator to heat it which is only necessary a couple of days per year. Year round, forced ventilation with heat recovery in all rooms keep it cool in summer and warm in winter.
But I digress, we weaved our way north through a tunnel under the A27 to Emsworth recreation ground. From there we headed south past the station and east on a little path along side the railway. The hares had been careful not to lay much flour around the station area to avoid giving clues to those arriving by train, not realising that 5 of the IOW hashers arrived by yacht and could see the flour around the marina!

The trail came to a large concrete pipe with a stream through it, we clambered across it and entered a field. I asked our location, to be told that it was written on the sign that I was leaning against, Emsworth Meadow nature reserve doh…..
We then headed North under the A27 into a lovley field alongside the River Ems heading for Westbourne where a fishhook caught Streaker, Stalker, Bika and Incognito. At Westbourne Incognito headed on north into the village to be called back and we headed back south.
Another fishhook caught, Slightly Disappointing, Streaker, Stalker, Beer pump and Nose Job. Then we came to a foot bridge over the A27 and head south along the edge of a cabbage field to the railway line with its, “look both ways before you cross”.
Back to West Emsworth we followed the yellow chalk arrows through Russet Gardens back to the main road. A sneaky path south just after the Sussex Brewery took us to the Slipper Mill Pond, which we skirted before heading back to the main road and the On-Inn to the Kings Arms car park.
By arrangement, the landlord had kindly allowed us to use the outside covered area to gather in, thus we didn’t lower the tone. Bambi and Old Faithfull laid on sandwiches and chips for everyone, which was really above and beyond the call of duty, really most kind – hurrah!

The trail was 4.9 miles long completed in 94 minutes – a most enjoyable hash in lovley weather.

In the post run circle, down-downs were awarded to:-

  1. The 4 people with dogs for reasons that elude me
  2. Slightly disappointing for jumping into the stream by the concrete tube and carrying all the dogs across
  3. Beer Pump for jumping in the stream at Emsworth meadow and splashing
  4. The Hares for a lovley run
  5. Popeye for being prepared to assist Turkey tail around the concrete tube and Turkey Tail for looking like she might have needed assistance (but didn’t).
  6. Sausage Lottery and Streaker for nipping into the Sussex Brewery for refreshments part way around.
  7. Busty and Nose Job for being pirates

The Hash-it was awarded to Slightly Disappointing for helping the dogs.

After suitable refreshments and banter, 5 of our trusty pirate compatriots had to leave to catch the tide for their voyage across the seas to distant lands, so we bid them a fond farewell.

On-On,
Popeye.
