10212023-11-05 11:00The Ref and Bambi - joint run with Haslemere H4Droke, direction East Dean off A285 SU924127

T'was a beautiful 11°C day with blue sky with small puffs of cloud and light wind under Droke Hangar's protection, as Hazlemere Hash joined us at Droke Lane's carpark, not far from East Dean. Thus there were 10 of H3 and 12 of us plus 4 dogs.

Bambi welcomed all to Hash 1021 and introduced the Hares as himself and the Ref, explained our foreign markings to the H3 contingent, told jokes and we were off on a less muddy than expected trail.

The route broadly speaking, in the lyrics of the Time Warp, 'a jump to the left and then a step to the right', in a large wiggly loop. We headed west up hill, east through the woods. We spotted some purple looking mushrooms, too large to be amethyst deceivers and a partridge. A fish hook caught Marathel, Snake Charmer, Bica, Whippet and your truly (to his dismay). We zig zagged up the hill through the woods heading generally east to Chiseldown through the surprisingly rustling leaves, considering the recent deluge. Belle took on a bit of a limp, so Snake Charmer wisely retired early with her.

Towards the top of the hill, we regrouped for a photo whilst Bambi explained that we were following a really short portion of Monarch's way; the 615 mile route from the Midlands to Bristol, down to the coast at Bridport and along the south downs to Brighton. Having topped the hill, we crossed Selhurstpark Road for a brief excursion before returning and following it on a parallel path east. We were then running towards Selhurst west car park, where we once cleared up firework display debris. At this point to my irritation, the sole of my shoe started to peel off (for 2 years, I had been looking forward to these shoes, whilst attempting to destroy the old ones, 2 months later).

The trail was an easy flat to down hill jog on the path, until a fish hook caught Old Faithfull, Beta Blocker, Bambi, Kinky and Whippet. It continued through the trees until it met the main path north, downhill to the parked cars.

The trail was 4 miles exactly completed in a leisurely 81 minutes - a most enjoyable hash in lovely weather.

In the post run circle, down-downs were awarded to:-

  • The Hares for a lovely run
  • Whippet for her flesh wound (bramble)
  • Chilli Willi for an 'I'm confused' exclamation
  • Snake Charmer for a pre-run phone call that kept dropping out, and Old Faithful for tripping up hill.
  • Kinky for short cutting and Alpha Blocker for complaining and short cutting
  • Substandard for plastic bag waterproofing, saving his other trainers from the ravages of the forest.
  • Bambi for laying 3 blobs indicating a true trail followed by a false trail symbol.

We then departed, or in one case tried to depart, got stuck, and was pushed out of the increasingly muddy carpark. The Partridge a Singelton provided a beer garden for suitable refreshments and nibbles.

    On-On,
    Popeye.
