There was a bearded man building a boat on Lavington Common last Sunday, as well as nailing planks to the hull he was trapping animals, a pair at a time. When asked whether or not he had collected any Hashers he gave a chuckle and said nothing.

Yes, it was wet, the Hares must be congratulated for their fortitude in such conditions and ability to deposit a trail that remarkably survived the deluge.

A new dog, Curly by name bounded out of the back of Hairbrush's chariot and I might be wrong but I don't think that we heard a bark or a whine from Curly all morning.

Pancsi and Splasher invited us to explore their dry and dusty trail as they gave direction to the East on the bridleway towards Duncton Common resulting in decidedly dodgy progress over slimy slithery fir roots which miraculously did not claim any lives, unlike many a drier day in the past.

Wet lips work well on Kinky's horn, this he proved as we continued to head East past tempting falsies to right and left following his dulcet tones. His luck came to an end when a detour South took us to the precipitous bank of the brook that runs East to The Rother.

A bit of a root around failed to find any tempting trail on the far bank so we followed the edge East thinking to cross the bridge a little further down. It was not to be however, soon everything South was false and Old Faithful was high above to the North jumping up and down, waving his arms. All slowed down as no one wanted to run up the hill and also no one could see any flour despite the Hares remonstrations "look there is a blob there, and there and there" etc.

At the top of the ridge an impromptu regroup was followed by a charge West alongside open clear felled ground on a lovely shale track without mud or puddle to worry Splasher. Presently we re-entered the gloom of pesky rhododendron and were spread to all compass directions by a back check with a multitude of falsies.

Unusually a great deal of useful calling was heard that served to focus our efforts on the direction that Flash had chosen continuing West and across Graffham Road into Main Wood and over the lovely soft bouncy leaf litter. To our annoyance, the trail now disappeared, having been meticulously scrubbed and covered by a person or persons unknown. Then, heading South back to the road the Hares had laid a portion of off piste trail that totally stumped us. Both of these factors meant that for quite a while we were following Hare directions.

Once across the road and back on Lavington Common it was a mere formality to find the On-In to the South East through knee deep limpid water amongst the long sedge, after almost one hour of soggy hashing.

Waiting for our return we found Sinbad who appeared in good health despite (or because of?) not hashing with us for some time.

A circle formed around Hairbrush who was taking too long to get into dry clothes and our JM presented the Hash-It to him. Then we all rushed off to flood the bar at the White Horse in Graffham where the staff dealt with the onslaught in short order and there was welcome warmth from the open fire.

On ? On ! Bambi
