This was such a lovely morning, late summer with a hint of autumn in the early
mistiness. The hares, celebrating their third wedding anniversary, had been at it since
sunrise, they finished so early that they had time to start worrying that no one would
turn up to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Indeed there was a relatively low attendance, however the quality made up for the quantity.
The sound of Aragorn going mental at the end of a tight lead heralded our departure East
into Sutton Common with Snake Charmer and SDHN way ahead of the rest of us, out there
somewhere in the heather.
Not to worry, a very early regroup found them enjoying the view towards Bignor, truly mists
and mellow fruitfulness, and soon we became part of it as we descended South,
crossing the road into Decoy Copse.
SDHN made the wrong choice at the next Check, heading off towards Column Hill, we did
not see him again for quite some time, apparently this happens quite
frequently, and not only on a Hash.
Hospital Copse was next, where the co-located double cross paths had us flummoxed for
a while until we found flour in the long green grass and Doc Leaves on the obscure path
South to Bignor Park, here to discus the artistic merits of the stainless steel sculpture and
wonder if perhaps it makes sounds when the wind is up.
It was with relief that we now headed West for Sutton, as no one fancied the uphill climb
to Bignor, only one obstacle, a field full of curious bullocks, big bullocks, harmless though,
and much less trouble than the nettles on the narrow path that brought us to the
telephone kiosk in Sutton.
It was here that the Hares mentioned that there was a pub just down the road, the pack
showed mixed interest, then the hares said "the drinks are on us!", the pack
now showed great interest in the pub, so we rushed down to the front
terrace at The White Horse Inn.
Was it just three years ago that we toasted "the bride and groom", so much has
changed, today we have a waitering person who chooses to identify as female, who very
efficiently delivers our beverages. We could easily have stayed there for the rest of the
day, it was so so pleasant, Sausage Lottery had stopped moaning about the nettles,
warm air was rippling through the leaves of the ancient oak opposite,
dappled sunlight, interesting conversation.
Reluctantly we managed to peel ourselves off the terrace and after a brief mingle at the
foot of the steps we spotted a Hare Arrow and took off North round the back of the pub,
albeit at a less frantic pace.
There was a quick clockwise loop to visit St John The Baptist church where we did not
tarry before continuing North into Winters Copse where we encountered a fish hook that
caught Snake Charmer, Popeye, Bambi, SDHN, and Bika.
We were nearly home now, just a slog through Keyzaston Farm on The Serpent Trail and
up through the heather back to the chariots, there was a fish hook along the way, but as
nearly everyone was walking by now it had little effect.
At the circle we talked about how SDHN had asked some cyclists if they had seen any
flour, and how Sausage Lottery and Snake Charmer had not regrouped, however we gave
the Hash-It to Splasher for totally ignoring the final fish hook.
Then we left, some forgetting that there was a crater at the car park exit.
