We did not want to waste an egg, otherwise we could have tried to fry one on the
road to Church Farm for the annual BBQ run, it was that hot.
The Spider people had prepared their vast estate to accommodate the needs of the
throng of hashers who gathered in the shade of various parasols and gazebos.
Gosh, so many nearly forgotten faces, Panda, Flash, Hairbrush and Carol, Tigger,
Two Ferrets with friend Rob, all attracted by the desire to purchase raffle
tickets for our famous prize draw.
As usual there was little input from the hares before the pack set off over the rickety
stiles that Spiderman had erected to climb over his garden fence and out
on to Saltern's Way to the first check.
The vista East from here was to flat fields of rapidly ripening broccoli running swiftly
to seed in the sunshine and heat before it can be plucked and presented to us at
49p a crown. It was just too hot for us to make our way through this green veg patch
as intended, instead we headed South on the dusty gravel path to joust with the rat
run vehicles on Appledram Lane and then the pub bound cars on Dell Quay Road.
Not the most appealing part of this run as the tarmac was heating up and our
shadows getting smaller and smaller.
The few who felt able to actually run were rewarded with a fish hook half way to the
shore that caught Flash, Kinky, Substandard, and Olive Oyl. Things got more
interesting as we took the shoreline path towards Copperas Point, interesting because
a sizeable faction took no notice of the false trail mark west and proceeded directly
to The Crown and Anchor to sample the cool amber nectar.
Meanwhile Splasher, Dr Blood, Kinky and a few others who followed the rules
(what rules?) had found the about turn in the trail taking them back to Dell Quay
along the damp pebbly foreshore. The moon was on our side, the tide had a few hours
before the flood, unlike with hares Sausage Lottery and Slightly when we had to wade
to glory in Pagham Harbour.
So as we stumbled over pebbles below the veranda of the Crown and Anchor we were
toasted by the reprobates above who hurled abuse at us, no one said life would be fair.
Somehow they wrenched themselves away from the hoppy froth, probably hungry for BBQ,
and staggered after the pack as it whooshed by North past the boatyard. We were all
together again after a crafty check involving the psychological effect of a "Hare
Arrow" near the path to St Mary The Virgin.
A short time later the easy to find trail West, back to Church Farm took us through fields
of recently baled hay, those bales are huge, back to Salterns Way and down to the hole
in the hedge that leads to the Spider garden, after one hour of frazzled hashing.
There, Spiderman was found surrounded by a plethora of BBQ grills, this for veggie
sausage, that for burgers, that for lamb chops, that for who knows what?, with his trusty
tongs he was playing them, flip something over to his right, prod
something over there, etc, we left him to it.
Hashers had brought a dish, a prize, some grog and a chair and most importantly a desire
to enjoy themselves, so that was what we did, thanks to our hosts, Spiderman and
Spiderwoman and others, too many to list who lent a hand here and there to oil the wheels.
The prize draw went well, with Pocket Rocket shouting out the numbers and not getting
cross with the bumbling gits who can't locate tickets that they obtained just moments before.
There was a brief discussion of some moments of note during the run and the Hash-it was
awarded jointly to love birds Two Ferrets and Rob who were observed taking the
purpose of "Kissing Gates" literally.
After much quaffing and munching and nattering folk started to drift away, as one does,
hindered by a jam just outside the gate caused by beach traffic. Consequently some
continued to enjoy the hospitality, balmy afternoon and croquet on a brown
grass lawn until early evening.
