We don't keep tabs on the temperature of our runs, so without fear of contradiction it seems to me that this Hash was the hottest ever, coming after a week of temperatures that have rivalled the "summer of 76" which some of the old gits remember as a time when we shared our bath with a friend and then emptied it on the lawn, remember those fights about who got to use the loofah first?.

A good sized pack gathered on the shady side, obviously, of the Inholmes Wood access road, to moan about the heat, obviously, and to welcome back visitor Camping Gaz (Guilford) and sometimes seen The Ref.

After a very brief review of flour marks, what seemed like a rather reluctant pack sauntered up the inevitable climb north west into the wood, although it must be said that Camping Gaz and Snake Charmer did do some running on the gradient, the former reporting that he had stumbled across the On-In flour, whoops!, in his exuberance.

We had only just reached the top of the climb when we hit the first of what was to be too many fish hooks, this one caught The Ref, Slightly Disappointing, Camping Gaz and Snake Charmer.

Soon we were out of the wood heading west on the path towards lower farm, prickly stubble underfoot, and the pack sticking like leeches to every bit of shade afforded by the meagre hedgerow at our side. Then south, a bit more shade and downhill at last towards Pitlands Farm, to a regroup where the path runs out of any cover, the brightness ahead looking like the mouth of a furnace.

Some pleasant chatter here, as we gathered, we noticed that even the weeds here were limp and flaccid due to lack of moisture, as were some of our members. Now, nothing for it but to gird up our loins and head out into the mid day sun, like mad dogs.

Some wasted energy checking towards the farm while Snake Charmer found the trail continuing south across Pitlands Barns Airstrip and into the merciful low hanging shade as we returned to Inholmes Wood.

The relief was short lived, here in the humid gloom we faced a steep climb up the stony, rooty, twisty, toe stubbing trail to the top of the ridge and continued towards Stoughton.

Next, a fish hook, catching Snake Charmer, Camping Gaz and Bambi while we were ambling along doing a bit of recovery jogging and nattering about the rock band Sweaty Nipples, can't think why?.

On the heights above Stoughton we turned north for home thank goodness, we nearly didn't because Camping Gaz was struck with temporary blindness, specs too dark?, and reported "no trail in that direction".

Not far and another fish hook, yawn, catching the same three plus The Ref and Kinky.

Oh!, what's this? Snake Charmer found a "you are here" map, which after a bit of study and knowing the On-In location, and utilising her mega brain, and studying the moss on tree trunks etc. announced that she knew where we would be headed.

That is the way it was, we found ourselves back at the On-In after one hour and fifteen minutes of sweaty nipples and had to scramble down a dusty bank on our arses to get to the Chariots. There we found that hares had provided us with a feast, amber nectar, all manner of crisps, shark cute airy, cheese etc. which we set upon with relish.

After our initial ravenous feeding frenzy we settled down to discussion while nibbling at this and that, subjects that came up were, we call Eddie "Rock Steady" from now on, why did Bambi not obey all the fish hooks?, Camping Gaz is too fit for us, should Slightly be pig wrestling Sussex Saddlebacks as a warm up before a Hash?.

The Hash-It (where was it?) was self administered to Snake Charmer who was wracked with guilt about consulting the map on the post.

Hashers continued in this vein for quite some time until bit by bit they drifted off leaving Substandard and Popeye to leave the scene clean.
