Hashers are now wrapping up in all sorts of warm clothing before coming out, hoodies, bobble
hats, fleeces, meanwhile Slightly Disappointing Hash Name (SDHM), Dr Blood, and Bambi stand
there, knees knocking in shorts , the foremost having just returned from thirty degree temperatures.
The bright sunshine contained no warmth, like the light coming on when you open the fridge door,
and it shone on a relatively large gathering, in front of the scout hut, no newbies,
but hashers not seen for a while.
The Hares, Jackie H and Kinky, only just managed to make the off, we all saw their direction of
return, so when we at last got underway we headed in the opposite direction, North West alongside
the cemetery railings, it's tempting to pick up a stick and cause a rattle on the uprights as you run
along here, you never know someone might wake up.
The top of this little ridge is infested with a rambling rhododendron jungle, perfect for splitting up a
pack among the evergreen maze of real and imaginary paths. The Ref and Old Faithful found the
way over and down to Sandy Lane to emerge on the main road next to the Half Moon bus stop.
When you have a free bus pass you notice bus stops.
We were then taken on a little loop to the North and West along the edge of Half Moon Covert and
back to Woolbeding Lane along Rother Walk, here out in the open the running was fine on soft loam
surrounded by eye soothing autumnal colours near and far.
Heading South, re-crossing the busy road, we were back in the mixed woodland of the common, if there
were any East/West falsies no one tried them because we soon found loads of flour up the slope,
continuing South.
The hares had arranged for the wind to uproot a large beech across the path here, and with a difficult
way around, most of the pack were forced into various undignified postures as they attempted to
get their leg over without dislocating a hip.
Just above, a regroup provided a photo opportunity and a chance to recover and smell the fungi.
On the go again we headed West, apace down to Several Road and into The Severals, with Splashback
and Nappy Rash leading us on to the broad fairway between bracken surmounted by tall spindly pine.
At the far end we turned South, but not before a fish hook had caught Olive Oil, Old Faithful,
Grasshopper and Bambi.
Some of this area has been clear felled which provided a source of orientation as the energetic pack
made quick work of the falsies, the true trail taking us ever South towards the Bepton Road. A hop
across a well filled drainage ditch provided some minor amusement before another regroup at which
for some reason or other we started talking about the song "Sorrow"
(The Merseys, later Bowie), I think it was something about the line "your acting funny
spending all my money".
We resumed hashing by crossing the course of the old Chichester to Midhurst line and then heading
East to now defunct Country Inn, where we have supped ale in the past, it's sad, so many closed
pubs around with ghost Facebook pages that say they are open.
Not far to go now, however the phantom Hash saboteur had been active, and the trail was
disappeared in places, not simply kicked out, but obscured with carefully placed piles of twigs and
leaves. Notwithstanding this impediment the pack lead by Slightly Disappointing found a trail just
north of the sand pits and back to scout hut, reaching the On-In after one hour and twenty two
minutes of really sociable hashing.
There was no debate over "which pub?" because Sausage Lottery and SDHM
produced beer and munchies from their chariot and we gathered around a picnic table
to munch and sup.
Then SDHM poured out several small cups of lager and lead us in the nomination for and
consumption of Down Downs, he's no singer, neither are many of us, judging by the dirge
that ensued. The hares, Bambi for short cutting, Grasshopper, Old Faithful were among the
folk that downed a small dose of rather fizzy lager most of which appeared to come back
down the nose in one case, great fun, what a laught, should do this more often.
Oh! no Hash-It, Spiderman forgot it again I assume.
On – On ! Bambi
