The 999 Hash - Woop-woop! That's the sound of da police! (nothing to do with them actually!).
Well, we did get slightly damp but certainly dodged a bullet with the weather, had driving rain in the Après Hash and hail on the way home.
Co-Hare Bambi was wounded due whilst laying the hash but valiantly finished laying the trail before carting himself off to A&E where he was promptly seen, patched up and discharged as fit to fight another day.
Both Icky Sticky Sauna and Sonja, brought visitors, it is great to see new faces particularly on such a challenging day.
T’was a breezy cool day with looming black clouds to windward as the valiant group of 17 Hashers set off west across Heyshott Common dodging puddles that you could set sail on.
On approaching a small stream, swollen to a frothing muddy torrent with the overnight deluge, the fearless troupe struggled to find the path before realising that they had to take their life in their hands and vault across. Everyone made it without using the nearby handy bridge and no one fell in!
Kinky with a delayed start, was most grateful that the checks were marked with the 1 true way and caught us up at the bridge.
Old faithful overran a rather sneaky half hidden check, taking the 1 dot seen, as being good & not seeing the other 2 deviously hidden behind a rotten stick. Grasshopper raced after to retrieve him and we climbed the steep sandy tree rooted hill.
A light shower swept swiftly by as we crested the hill and set off North West into the bracken again. Hash hound, Scrappy, disappeared for a while but was found to be well ahead of Slightly Disappointing, figuring out that as an experienced Hasher, he would find his way eventually.
Whilst veering Northwards, we crossed a disused railway and battled the slippy slidy shiggy before looping back to a bridge over said, disused rail line. Having searched everywhere, the Hare pointed out a gentle gradient back down to the disused line and under the bridge and so doing a confusing complete loop.
From there heading west the group were perplexed to find a fish-hook without a number and hence with energy efficient thinking regrouped, Old Faithful being first and only person to encircle the troupe true fish-hook style. This hare humbly apologises for omitting to mention the fish-hook number at the start, so Spiderman photographed us beaming from ear to ear whilst dripping a little.
Another short light shower whistled past us as we headed for the spot where Bambi met a stone with speed and force.
Having crossed the road Sonja and Grasshopper vaulted the watery ditch to find a false trail on the other side. Grasshopper found a way back avoiding vaulting, that was in fact deep leaf litter on a pond - damp but otherwise unharmed he continued.
We headed east over the scenic heather moreland that is Ambersham common, before circling sound and west back down the hill to the car park, having covered 3.6 miles in an hour and 20 minutes.
At a brief circle, yours truly confessed to forgetting the Hash-It and so awarded it to himself. In addition we would have had down-downs if the JM had remembered.
A stronger than average shower, concluded proceedings, so we took ourselves to warmth and shelter in the Greyhound on Cocking Causeway, a lovely and most accommodating pub with a fire, warmth and refreshing grog. We discussed the catering for the 1000th Hash next weekend in Hunston, where we can bring our own food to share & buy grog.
On-On!
